My Own Worst Enemy

I’ve known this for years. I am my own worst enemy. The good part is as I get older, the better I am at not doing this. But sometimes things happen to make me wonder if I’m on the right path and doing what I’m supposed to do.

See, all I have ever wanted to do is to write. I worked toward the day when I didn’t have to get up and go work for someone else. Even when I worked for myself, all I wanted to do was be able to go from my bedroom to my office. And I’d had my office in place for years.

Then life comes along and things don’t fall into place the way you think they should. Or one of your kids tell you that you love writing more than you love them or the grandchildren. Now that one cause me to pause and take this little self-doubt journey.

I’ve never doubted my ability but because I get bored easily with almost everything, I doubted my tenacity. But to be honest, writing is the only thing I have done all my life. Everyone has to have a passion and writing is mine. I think that is why I would fail at so many things...not exactly fail...but once accomplished absolutely no desire to continue that path. I have stories which are like that and it’s one of the reasons, I can’t write endings first. I can write the last line but nothing before it as I have to take the journey with my characters.

Still, after all is said and done, here I am, at my computer, typing away. Writing is my passion and I will never give it up.

Today's quote goes right along with this theme:

And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt. ~Sylvia Plath

Everyone needs to know they are good at something. If writing is what you are good at, go for the gusto and don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you that your stories are worthless or that you don’t have it in you. You do. You just have to keep at it and they will read whatever you produce because they like you.

See ya tomorrow!

  1. I think if you're a writer it's in your blood. No matter where life takes you, you'll always go back to it.

  2. I believe a person is born with the ability to write a good story, book, novel, whatever you want to call it. You may stop doing it for a while, but that talent always draws you back. When the time is right, your talent takes off and you are there...an author. You made it and I doubt you will ever stop.

  3. That's an eye catching picture (woman licking sword). Good luck writing something on your blog every day. I would have a hard time coming up with ideas.

  4. My own blog is languishing. So good luck with yours.
I wrote mine consistently from 2005 until 2008, when I went back to work. I was a SAHM for quite awhile.
Writing is a passion and there is nothing wrong with exploring your passions. You aren't the only author who claims that writing takes away time from family. Usually it's the housework and cooking that gets ignored. When you are in the zone - yeah but sometimes you aren't and that's when you have family time and refresh the well, so-to-speak.
Good luck with your continued writing and have fun.
May you fall in love with your characters.

  6. Margaret,

I do believe you are correct in that. I know I have to write every day no matter what. Some days more, some days less but always something.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  7. I have to agree with you, Patsy! It's amazing how many times I thought I could stop writing only to be brought back to it again and again.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  8. Believe it or not, Anne, ideas are easy once you start looking for them in your every day world.

Because my husband travels so much, I would go an hour early to pick him up so I could watch people. By the end of that hour, I could have up to ten new ideas.

Of course, not all of them would pan out, but at least I got them!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Michelle,

I so understand with a blog languishing. It's hard to put up something every day which is why I'm starting write them in batches. LOL! Now I just have to remember to promo them every day!

I agree that family recharges one when the well is running dry. Thank goodness that doesn't happen to me too much. But when it does, it usually takes me a couple of months to get out of the funk.

But I always do. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Susan,

I hear what you're saying. Both my DH and I say neither of us are grown up yet.

But like he says, at least I've found my passion and know how to get there.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Hi Lynn,
My guess is you were born to write. Even if you wrote a few words a day they still count. We also can't make every one happy so better to hear it while you're doing something you love instead of working for someone else and hearing it. :)And why would you want to grow up ? There's no fun in it Lynn.lol I don't care how old I do or don't look I'm still growing and loving it. lol
