Loving The Scotsman ~ @oddlynn3 #MySexySaturday #MSSWeek27 #Saturday7 #LynnCrain

It’s week 27 at My Sexy Saturday and welcome to one of the sexiest Saturdays ever. First, I hope that each of you who celebrate the American tradition of Thanksgiving had a very, very wonderful and happy time with your family. Also, I’d like to extend a Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate that holiday. Both are wonderful family times meant to bring people, near and far, together.

My Sexy Saturday is a weekly blog hop where authors share sexy snippets of their books with 7 words, 7 sentences or 7 paragraphs. Each week we entertain you through our snippets that we post. This is for you, our readers, as we value and appreciate each one of you.

This week we’re still in my wonderful story Loving the Scotsman. We’ve in Chapter 3 and there is so much more to share with you. Again, this is a story told in 1st person POV from both the heroine and hero as all the books in the series will be. It’s a unique approach, and I love it! Loving the Scotsman is this: the lovers are being drawn together after 15 years apart. I’m currently writing the second book of The MacKenzie Clan. Here are my sexy 7 sentences for the week. Enjoy!

And do what? I thought to myself. Just what exactly did I have planned for my life? It certainly wasn’t going like I thought fifteen years ago. Then, the world was my oyster, I knew exactly where I would be. Next to Logan, having his children, building a life together, doing something important that mattered to us both. It all came tumbling down due to circumstances beyond either one of our control. Yet, in many ways, the scar felt as fresh as the day the wound was made.

Please visit all the great authors from My Sexy Saturday weekly blog hop listed below. Have a great weekend...see you next week!

The Reveal

As you all know, last week I was nominated for the Creative Writer Blogger Award. I’ve had a wonderful week answering comments regarding my truths and my lie. Here’s my answers!

1) I live with a wonderful Scotsman who is the inspiration for many of my heroes.

This one is absolutely true. My husband is a MacLeod and we’re a Scottish family through and through. When we went to Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, the ancestral home of the MacLeods, my dear husband was cheeky enough to ask for the family discount. The answer surprised him even more as the kid working the entry booth was also a MacLeod. We’re going back to Scotland this summer if I have my way. LOL!

2) I have over five thousand, that’s right 5000 books, hardcover to paper to school volumes, in my house in two rooms and nine books cases.

This is absolutely true. Matter of fact the only real reason I know that I fit 397 books in one huge shelf is that we recently went through them to prune them down. I have two floor to ceiling shelves in my office, we have four more in a storage closet and a whole wall in our utility room. Each and every one of them have books. Like I said, there are some which are books from college, some which are the science fiction/fantasy collection and the rest are various romance books I’ve kept over the years. In my office, I have one shelf for my writing books.

3) My all time favorite movie is Alien.

Again, another truth. I know this might surprise many people but there is just something about Alien that gets me every time I hear the phrase ‘lucky, lucky, lucky’ and I can’t explain it. Also know that if I were to pick my top five all time favorite movies, they would be Alien, While You Were Sleeping, Somewhere in Time, PS I Love You and The Terminator. See, you can find a love story just about anywhere...LOL!

4) I just became a grandmother to twin boys.

Another truth. My oldest son, who was born when I was eighteen, just had a set of twin boys in March of this year. And boy are they cute! I’ve included the happy family’s picture so you can see I didn’t lie. They are truly a wonderful addition to my life and a joy as I can give them back whenever I need to do so...LOL! There is nothing like holding a baby who is just out of their bath, all warm and cuddly and smelling so good!

5) I love chocolate.

Lie and so not true. While I know this might surprise some of you, I really don’t like chocolate. Now, that doesn’t mean I don’t eat it...I just don’t like the flavor...unlike my DH and sons who love it. Sure, there are times when the hormonal monster comes out when I crave the darn stuff, but there’s a reason for that I’m told. When I used to do the long hikes required to get my geology degree, we used to take a two pound bag of M&Ms for the sugar rush, two gallons of water and maybe a beer. Yeah, we were young and dumb but more than likely the beer came back and we’d have devoured the M&Ms and the water. They do give that sugar buzz needed to hike the hot desert mountains. My DH still wonders how we ended up together since he loves chocolate and always brings home some from Europe. LOL!

6) I have an elf series which will conclude with this year’s Christmas book.

Yup, the Santa’s Elves series is slated to be complete this year. I have a book for August if I decide to write something about the dark elf and I might not. The last child with have their story told this holiday season. Not much left to say after Maddox has his say. I do promise to wrap up the story in such a way, you all know where everyone is and what has happened with them since their story.

Now the part you all have been waiting for...the winner of the contest...now, let me explain how this works. I put everyone’s name in an excel spreadsheet and have either the DH or the youngest son pick a number 1 to whatever the total number is. It makes if totally fair as neither one of those have a vested interest in the outcome other than to make me happy...:-). So the winner for this contest, the $10 gift certificate and an ebook from me, is...drumroll please... Carol L. (Lucky4750@aol.com). Carol please contact me at lynncrain@cox.net so we can work out the details!

Thanks for entering everyone! I’ll have another contest this week for another great prize.

A WIP Revisited

A couple of years ago, I started a column I called ‘My Creative Process’ about how I write. I am happy to convey the story I talked about is almost complete and I’d like to start the column again with my original post from 2008.

Yeah, yeah...I know...a couple of years to finish a book. BUT the reality of the situation is this book always got put to the side because of other projects and family...did I tell you I'm a grandma? LOL! I'll leave that for another day!

Last year, I started with a new critique group that was relentless in making sure I got this one finished. In the next couple of weeks, I will be putting the last words on paper and will be doing the happy dance as this is what I’m calling my breakout book.

It’s hot and fun and oh so good. And while this first scene may have changed a little bit, not much else has. Except I’ve gotten better at what I do and that’s always a blessing.

I hope you like this glimpse into my past. I promise, I won’t keep you waiting so long this time!

My Creative Process: Your Glimpse Into a WIP
By Lynn Crain
2008

Okay, I’ll admit when I decided to let you all in on my creative process, my first thought was “What creative process?” See, I considered myself a pantser. You know some one who is always writing by the seat of their pants. Amazing isn’t it, since most of my stuff appears seamless?

See, years ago, I planned everything to the nth detail. And with good reason too. When you do sci-fi or fantasy, those things need to be planned out. It’s one of the reasons that the Crusin’ project is going so slow. When I write those type of stories, I usually write a section and then make sure what I did was correct for the world I had built. And that takes time. There are some stories that I’ve let languish for months just working out the right scenario in my head. If it doesn’t work for me, it certainly won’t work for you.

Now the real reason I can be a pantser today is because I have internalized most of what I used to write down. And somehow, I manage to keep all the facts straight. So basically, I play these little head games with myself whenever I’m at the computer. Sometimes I do write the answers down on a page which I then save to my idea folder or particular story folder. A lot of the times if the story is contemporary I don’t need to do that at all any more.

So just what fuels my creative process you might ask. It can be a lot of things. Some times it people, some times it’s a picture and some times it’s a title. So let’s start at the beginning with a picture this time and I’ll take you through the whole process. And yes, you are seeing the beginnings of what is known as a work-in-progress or a WIP. I always have about ten projects going at any one time because I tend to get bored easily. With all those projects I am never bored.

First, let’s look at this picture. Intriguing, isn’t it? Wait a minute…we can’t put pictures here…LOL! So I’ll have to describe it to you. The picture is of a woman standing there with her underwear around her knees. Send me an email and I’ll send you a copy of the mock cover I’ve made. But onward – I love the colors and I just love her stance. And the first time I saw it, I laughed my ass off. Once the humor aspect was done, I started to look at it carefully. Okay…I had this wonderful picture…which brought some very naughty thoughts to mind. Now, just how was I going to use those thoughts?

I stared at it for a few minutes and came up with the title and or tag line “Where’s My Underwear Anyway?” And then I came up with another one “My Underwear is Missing – Do You Have It?” And finally, “Explain to Me Again Why You Have My Underwear?”

I really like, “Where’s My Underwear Anyway?” and decide that’s what I’m going to keep as the title of this work-in-progress. You might ask me how I determine the length of this new venture and I will honestly have to tell you that I won’t know until it’s done. That’s another joy about being a pantser. The stories call me and I answer their call. They tell me how long they are going to be and who the characters are. I follow that train of thinking and work accordingly. Most of the time I have a general word count in mind but it is no way carved in stone.

So, now I have a title and a cover picture. Thank goodness I always put together what I call concept art that goes in with a manuscript. Basically, I put something together and then let my publisher know I want either that cover or something very much like it. Yeah, my creative juices don’t just flow in the writing arena. You’ll see my concept of the cover at the end of this column.

Okay, the next thing I think about is the first line. The first line in any story is the hook. One of the best writing talks I ever went to was called ‘Hook, Line and Sinker’ and it was about the importance of having a great first line. I have given many a talk on the importance of this myself. Once I had the concept down myself, I quickly won a few first line contests put on by the various publishing houses in the late ‘90s. Unfortunately, a great first line can’t be the only thing your story has going for it.

So what am I thinking now in regards to the first line? First, I have to set the scene. We have this woman, who doesn’t know where her underwear is obviously…so who would she be talking to about this? Her girl friends more than likely, right? You betcha! I can see them sitting around a table in a quiet section of the local bar/pub discussing the turn of events. Here’s what I see for that first line and the beginning of this quirky story.

“So…you really don’t know where your underwear might be?”

I stared at my best friend across the table. It sounded so much better when I really wasn’t thinking about it. “Do you have to be so loud?” I put my head in my hands and peered through my fingers at Monica, who’s been my best friend since grade school.

“It’s not my fault that you have the mother of all hangovers. Again. How many times have I told you to stay away from the tequila?” She sighed and sipped on her hot tea. “We’re in Scotland. You’re supposed to be drinking whiskey.”

“I know, I know. It’s to-kill-ya. But please, I gotta figure out where my underwear is.” I sent her my best ‘you have to help me’ look.

“I’ll try but this is just way too funny.” She looked around the almost empty pub. “Just think…this place was the scene of an…underwear napping.” She laughed then winked at me.

“This really isn’t funny, you know.” I lay my head down on my hands. Just thinking about it was making me queasy.

“You’re on vacation, why are you so worried?” She shrugged her shoulders in that typical Monica way.

I looked up at her and groaned. “It’s a working vacation. I’m a lawyer for heaven sakes. I’m supposed to be a model citizen.” I really wished I could do more than just look at her with distain. What I really wanted to do was wring her neck and get that smug expression off her face. “And I’m here with bunch of damn lawyers!” My voice rose and my head immediately began throbbing like a percussion band. I really needed to watch that, I thought as rubbed my forehead.

Monica sat back in her chair and sipped her tea daintily once again. “You really need to get into this Scottish tea. It’ll do wonders for that aching head.”

I grimaced and wished she hadn’t reminded me. My law firm was an international company and when we found out an important conference on international law was being held in Edinburgh, Scotland, we jumped on the chance. Monica and I had toured the continent right out of law school but of all the places we went to, Scotland was our favorite. We had accrued plenty of vacation time and it only took a little time to convince our employers that it would be in their best interest to let us go to this particular conference.

“Would you just quit it?” I mumbled into the table.

“What was that? You don’t remember any of it?”

I looked up with what I hoped was the most ill and forlorn look I could give her. “I wish you’d just stop it.”

She pursed her lips before sitting her tea back on the table. “You know you really shouldn’t be so worried.”

“Why not? Half the lawyers here have already tried to jump my bones and the other half wished they had tried. How do you get away with them not slobbering all over you? And you know how I get when I ‘m drinking tequila.”

She let out a long, low whistle. “Hon, I’m not the all American blonde woman here. And you betcha, I totally understand better than anyone just how you are when you drink that poison. But really, you don’t need to worry as I know who has them.”

This was a shining spot in an otherwise dim day. “You do? Who?”

She smiled at me then with that all knowing bitch smile she uses when she knows she has the superior position. “Yeah, I do.” Monica paused for a minute for effect. If nothing else the woman was dramatic and very effective in the courtroom.. “The stud has them.”

I let my head thump back down on the table. This was worse than I thought.

Not bad for a first try. And yeah, I put this together just for this column. I might tweak it a little but it’s pretty good right out of the chute. I read it to my husband who was standing over me, even he got a kick out of it and that’s pretty hard to do. I’ve decided to do something so totally different with this story that might warrant me passing it off to an agent. We’ll see.

Here's the cover that started it all. Isn't it wonderful? Hope you all agree!

Next time we’ll talk about what I do next in the process. I promise not to leave you hanging too long! Later…and have a great week.

The sentiment is the same after two years...you all have a great week...and I’ll have another installment for you!

An Interview with Kerri Nelson

We’re here today with the lovely Kerri Nelson. Help me welcome her to the wonderful world of XtraOrdinary Romance. Hi, Kerri and welcome!

At what age did you realize you wanted to be a writer?

Well, I still have a copy of the first poem that I ever wrote in the second grade. It is entitled “Black Cat, Dark as Night”. So, that must have been my first masterpiece!

What has been your biggest influence on becoming a writer?

My love of reading has always driven me to write. There is nothing more satisfying that getting lost in a truly great book and losing yourself in another world. It is the ultimate escape from reality. I just always wanted to provide that same experience for others.

How did you feel when you got your first publishing contract?

I was so excited that I felt like running laps around the neighborhood. Instead I tried to call my husband and then my mother and no one was answering the phone. I kept getting everyone’s voice mail. LOL!

How many novellas/novels have you published to date? When did you have your first sale?

I sold my first book in January of this year (2009) and since that time I’ve sold a total of 9 books! This has been an amazing year, to say the least!

Tell me about your latest release. Please include if it is part of a series or a standalone book.

My latest release is a Christmas short story entitled When Ginger Snapped. Right now it is a stand alone book but I’m thinking of making it into a series. I have tons of ideas for these characters and I enjoyed this project so much. This book was made possible by my win of the Browler Books Holiday Short Story Contest! The story is all about Holiday Madness and a sensual Massage!

What was your inspiration for this book?

Well, the holiday season was fast approaching and I thought about how insane it gets for some people. My husband always rushes out on Black Friday to get the best deals but you would never catch me out there fighting the crowds. So, I thought about how I could write a book set at that time frame and When Ginger Snapped was created.

How do you categorize yourself: pantser or plotter?

Oh, I am totally a pantser. I get the initial idea for a book and then I just run with it. I never really know where the characters are going to end up until I get going. I’ve tried to do the plotting route and it just never works out for me. I spend more time revising the plot outline that I never get anything actually written.

How do you handle the editing/revision process?

I don’t do any editing or revisions until I’ve completed the entire book. I just sit down and write until it is done. Then, and only then, do I go back to do any editing or necessary rewrites. It is the only way that works for me.

You’re received some fantastic reviews...how do you feel about them and why?

I love each and every one of my reviews. I was a reviewer for a while and it is actually a tough job. It’s not the reading of free books but the summarizing of your thoughts on someone else’s work that provides a real challenge. You want to be totally fair and impartial and yet you need to let reader’s know your opinion of the piece. I appreciate all the reviewers who have taken the time to read my work.

Did anything odd happen while you were researching this story?

I don’t have anything odd on this latest story as it didn’t require much research. However, I would say the toughest research and most challenging book that I’ve written so far is my Scottish time travel book entitled The Mystical Kilt. It releases later this month and it was so tough for me. I love reading historical and I’ve always wanted to write one. I never dreamed that it would be so tough. You need to have enough factual information about your time period to make it realistic. Yet you don’t want to bog down the readers with too much detail. It was exhausting but I’m really proud of it.

What is the most interesting part of writing for you? The least?

The most interesting part of writing for me is the fact that when a reader purchases my book…they are really just reading my thoughts, dreams, and imagination. It is almost like they are reading my mind. My tagline on my website represents just that same idea… “sharing my imagination with the world…one page at a time”.

If you could time travel, where would you go?

I might like to visit the Regency era England. I’ve been researching it for a new book that I’m working on. It was a very wealthy time period and I simply love the attire and the attitude of the time. I don’t know that I’d like to stay in that time period but a visit would be grand.

Who is your biggest fan?

This would be a toss-up between my husband and my mother. They are both incredibly supportive. My husband edits most of my work and offers invaluable advice and suggestions. My mother is always the first person to buy a copy of my book on release day. She brags to everyone she knows and even told a stranger on an airplane to buy my book for their Kindle that they were using during the flight!

Do comments or letters you receive from fans and other writers influence you in any way?

I adore comments from readers and fans. They are what keeps me going and motivated to write more and to write better! You can never practice and improve your craft too much.

Why do you write romance novels?

I write romance because I truly believe in the happily ever after. Who doesn’t want a happy ending? I love to make my characters believable and it is important that they experience real life scenarios. That makes them relatable to the readers. I don’t think there is anything in life that people can relate more to than the ups and downs of romance. Everyone has loved and lost and many have found out the hard way that love doesn’t come easy. Romance is a way for readers to know for sure that they are not alone out there.

Where can readers find out more about you and your work?
