New Year's Blog Hop

Good morning hoppers! Yes, you’ve come to the right place for the New Year’s Blog Hop. I’ve even got the graphic to prove it! LOL!

If you are starting on my blog you’ll need to get the whole scoop about the blog hop! To go to the spot with all the instructions, just click on the logo and it will take you there. I'm here for three days of fun, fun, fun and did I mention...PRIZES!!!

My contribution to the hop is simple. First, each of you will be entered into my daily drawing for a copy of my latest book, A Viennese Christmas. Second, have any of you heard of the painting called The Kiss? Here’s a copy of it in case you’ve never seen it:

This painting is by the artist Gustav Klimt and is a very famous painting that resides in the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. It also happens to be just right up the street from my flat. Here’s more on the painting and the artist should you be so inclined to check them out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kiss_(Klimt)

Now, you’re probably wondering just why I’m telling you this. It's quite simple...my grand prize package will be a ‘Kiss’ package sent to you direct from Vienna. In it you will find anything and anything in regards to the painting ‘The Kiss’ or Vienna itself. Things like coasters, notecards, or keychains...but the best part is...this is a once-in-a-lifetime-gift. This is my best blog hop package yet IMHO.

So, what do you have to do to be entered you ask...simple...just comment and tell me one thing about the excerpt I post from my latest book A Viennese Christmas each day. It’s that easy. Tell me whatever you want about my story...and do it often...every comment will be one entry into my contest. Please, please, please do not forget to give me your email addy so that I can get in touch with you.  The more you comment, the more you’re entered. I will announce the today’s ebook winner at the end of tomorrow’s blog and the Grand Prize Winner will be revealed on Tuesday, January 15.

Here’s your first excerpt...enjoy!

Her disappointment must have been plain on her face as she found herself suddenly gazing into the greenest eyes in a very handsome male face. A question in German followed as she tried to ascertain just what he said.
“I’m sorry,” she stated, her confusion obvious. “I’ve only picked up a word or two since I’ve been here. Do you speak English?”
“You’re American?” he questioned without the accent most Austrians possessed.
“Don’t make it sound like such a curse. There are a lot of us, you know.” Her indignation evident in her tone.
His rich laughter filled the space, warming her to her bones in ways she hadn’t expected. “Sorry. I guess one does pick up the attitudes of where they live.”
She looked at him puzzled. “That’s that supposed to mean?”
“Henry Jager, American, at your service ma’am.” His sweeping bow brought a smile to her lips.
“Amanda Kranz and I hardly think I qualify as a ma’am.” She stuck her hand toward him. His firm grasp sent an electric sensation as she felt the spark deep within her. She swore he felt it too as his eyes darkened.
“Do you prefer Amanda or Mandi? I know there’s not much of a choice with Henry.” His serious gaze spot of his interest.
Laughter bubbled up in her, the first such emotion in weeks. “Henry is a fine, strong name. And it doesn’t matter much with mine.” His hot look made her want to shiver in anticipation of what she could only speculate.
“Really? I would have thought your business associates would call you Amanda. Now your intimate contacts I expect call you Mandi.”
She gazed at him. Intimate contacts, now there was a misnomer. It had been years since she’d had any intimate contacts of the male persuasion. “Sounds good to me.”
“You gave in too easy.” He reluctantly let go of her hand as his look took on a more serious aspect. “Are you meeting someone?”
She shook her head. “No one to meet.”
“Good.” He grabbed her hand again, placing it in the crook of his arm. “Have you ever been to one of these before?” Henry expertly meandered around people, baby carriages and more as he led her to the next booth.
“Not really. I saw them last year but being so new to the city, I couldn’t bring myself to go to one alone.” She gazed at the Rathaus beyond them, remembering how intimidated she’d been by building even though it had a Christmas tree in front.
His eyes narrowed. “Sounds like you’re still a relative newcomer.”
“I suppose so. I got here in November of last year.”
“Ah – your impression?” His brows lifted when he drew back as if to study her face.
“Very commercialized. I expected something more – ” she struggled to find the right word. “– more homey, more authentic – more Austrian.”
Henry gazed around a moment before looking back at her. “I see your point. This is probably the one Christkindlemarkt that’s got the least to offer in specialized, authentic goods in my opinion except it does have a certain ambiance. And of course, there’s the skating rink as well as the park decorations.”
Her brow arched in amazement. She really hadn’t expected anyone to agree with her. All the women she knew gushed over every one of them. “You agree with me?”
His naughty smile was breathtaking. “Most definitely. This is the one where most of the tourists come. While there are some very Austrian things here hidden amongst the drivel, most are not unique or special in any way.”
“My thoughts exactly. Where exactly does one find more traditional items?” Astonishment spread through her. She had not once heard anyone say a negative comment about Vienna. All her colleagues gushed over the city but as far as she was concerned, it was just another place to live.
They stopped in front of a food booth, the aroma tantalizing. “Would you like something hot to drink?”
The brisk breeze nipped at her cheeks and she felt the cold through her coat. She definitely could use something to warm her up. “Sure.”

See you all tomorrow!

Romancing the Hop - Day 3

The Calgon Moment ~ Day 3

Welcome to Day 3 of the Romancing The Blog hop. I’m catching up on everyone’s comments, so don’t forget to come by and see what I say to you personally! Today is also Six Sentence Sunday where I put up six sentences from a current work in progress. It’s right below this post...and for those who post on both...you’ll be entered into a special drawing where you’ll get a $10 gift certificate from Amazon AND a copy of my book The Harvester...how cool is that?!?

The first thing I need to do is to award the $20 gift certificate to Amazon...the winner for September 1st is...throuthehaze! Come on down and claim your prize. I will email you at the address you provided. Congrats!

I want to thank each of you for sharing your favorite authors...they are some of mine as well...but being a writer, you’d think it would be hard for me to read. Well, sometimes it is hard for me to read a book especially if I want to get my red pen out...LOL! No, really, a lot of the times I have to turn off the editor in me because I want to read for the pure enjoyment of reading. It’s what I call my Calgon Moment...remember the ‘Take Me Away’ commercials? Yeah, reading is that moment for me.

All writers started as readers. We wanted to write a better story, something more intense, something in a different world. We wanted the story to take us away to far off places so we could see how the rich or famous live. I learned many things reading books. I’ll never forget the day while I was in college and a group of friends got together for dinner. Afterwards, we decided to play Trivial Pursuit...remember that game? Well, we went head to head, girls against boys and both teams were on the verge of winning. Just one history question stood between us...argh...history! I knew the two girls I had with me were a little lax in that area and as for myself, well let’s just suffice it to say a lot of my learning came for reading books for pleasure.

The conversation went something like this:

“When did the Battle of Hastings occur?”
I look at the girls and shrug my shoulders thinking as I didn’t want to give it away. “Do you think that’s recent history?”
Girl 1 nods. “Absolutely sure it’s World War II. I remember my father talking about it.”
At this point I want to scream but that’s another story. “Really? You think so?”
Girl2 frowns. “Don’t look at me. I didn’t even know there was something called the Battle of Hastings.”
Great. That means the decision is mine. I could win or lose this game based upon my answer. “So you think we should go with World War II?”
Both girls nod and I see the boys across the board leering at me. This was going to be so fun. “Ok.”
Boy 1 grins. “So your answer is World War II?”
I shook my head. “I didn’t say that and since it’s my turn I’ll answer the question.”
Boy 2, who just happens to be my future husband. “Fine. So what’s your answer? I’m sure you don’t know it as you aren’t a history buff.”
I scowled. “Really.” I look back at the girls and give them a wicked smile before turning back to the guys. “The Battle of Hastings happened in 1066 when William the Conqueror  came across the English Channel and whipped King Harold’s butt.” The guys look was priceless. “Don’t ever tell me I don’t learn anything by reading romance.”
Boy 2 is speechless. “What book? I’d like to know what book had that information.”
I smiled. “A book called The Wolf and the Dove starts right after the battle and explains why the knight in it is going off to conquer new land for the king. I’ll go find it if you want.”
Boy 2 frowns. “I believe you. I’ll never say anything again about you reading those books.”
“Good because I want to write them.”

Never again am I questioned about my reading of romances. That event occurred over thirty years ago and I’m still with the guy.

Now today, I read for a different reason because personally if I want to learn something I do research on the internet or pick up an ebook to find out what I need to know. I read every day to escape into someone else’s world that they’ve created. Most days, I’ve been in one of mine all day and it’s nice to see just how another author has taken something thus making their own. I want to relate to their characters like I do my own but I want to do it for the sheer enjoyment of the written word.

I can remember, and I still do this, taking a book with me while I lounge in a bathtub full of hot water, soaking my cares away. I have a book with me everywhere I go today as there are many train rides for me getting to a final destination in Vienna. I have one to read as I wait for the doctor. Sometimes it’s an ebook, sometimes it’s a print book but there is always some sort of book in my hand.

How about you? When do experience your Calgon Moment? Do you have a story about reading romance? Can’t wait to hear your answers!

Remember, there will be another give away of a $20 Amazon gift certificate to one lucky person who comments today. Don’t forget to leave your email!

Valentine Day Blog Hop

Hi everyone!

Valentine’s will soon be on us and I decided I wanted to do something different for the holiday this time. All I can say is...wow...this is very, very different from what I normally do. I decided to join a Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. The contest starts on February 11, 2012 and ends February 14, 2012 at midnight. You can find all the details on this page http://thebloghopspot.com/event-page  and while you’d there, you might as well gander at all the awesome prizes that are offered.

Did you notice just how many are participating? There are over 230 authors giving things away during this great contest. This is awesome and chances are good for winning. Scan the list and you’ll find me at 206. I was slow getting into the game...LOL! The bad thing is what it doesn’t say and that’s what my prizes are for the duration of the four days.

For my portion of this contest, I will be giving away daily 1 - $10 Amazon or ARe gift certificate and 1 ebook of the readers choice. At the end of the four days, my grand prize will be a $25 Amazon or ARe gift certificate and all of the Santa’s Elves series of ebooks, which is 7 books so far. All prizes will be chosen from those who stop by and comment on this blog during the contest days. All prize drawings are random and all winners will be announced on this blog immediately after the drawing or no later than the day after the drawing was held. Any prizes not picked up within 5 days will be forfeited.

We’ll have a lot of fun during those four days as I will bring you all up-to-date with what is happening in my life. I really promise not to bore you with anything mundane. I’ll be sharing things from Vienna, how my latest books are coming along, excerpts and more. I will also be tweeting all this information so if you haven’t followed me on Twitter, now’s the time to do it.

Can’t wait to see you all hear! Catch you all for the contest!

Creative Writer Award

My wonder friend, Dawn Roberto, decided to give this blog, the Creative Writer Blogger Award for this blog. I’m always flattered and humbled by any award, this one is gonna make me do some work here. LOL! I even get to put this cool little graphic on my blog, so all is good.

The instructions which came with this award are quite simple. I either give you 5 truths and one 1 lie about myself, or I give 5 lies and 1 truth. Which will it be, which will it be? I’ll do the 5 truths and one lie. Your job will be to figure out the lie in the six statements. I’ll even give the winner a $10 gift certificate to ARe so you can choose the books of your choice and I’ll throw in one of my own on top of that!

Entering is simple, you must become a follower of my blog and leave a comment to tell me which one statement is a lie about myself. This contest ends one week from today, June 4, at midnight and I will announce the winner the morning of June 5. This is open to all readers.

Here are my truths and a lie. Good luck in figuring it out.

1) I live with a wonderful Scotsman who is the inspiration for many of my heroes.

2) I have over five thousand, that’s right 5000, books, hardcover to paper to school volumes, in my house in two rooms and nine books cases.

3) My all time favorite movie is Alien.

4) I just became a grandmother to twin boys.

5) I love chocolate.

6) I have an elf series which will conclude with this year’s Christmas book.

Now I get to bestow this great honor on some other well deserving bloggers. They are:
