Wednesday's Writer ~ @KayPhoenix #KayPhoenix #BorealisArdor

Today, I have the lovely Kay Phoenix with us. I have known Kay for a few years through our association with the Las Vegas Romance Writers. We were critique partners while I was still in the States and I still get to occasionally work with this wonderful author.

She is celebrating the release of her new book, Borealis Ardor, and I can’t be more happy for her. Please join me in extending a heartfelt welcome to this week’s Wednesday’s Writer.

How do we find out about you and your books?  Check my website at www.KayPhoenix.com for updates.  From there you can find links to my blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

How many readers/fans contact you?  I tend to spend more time than I should on Facebook, so they can easily find me there or email me at KayPhoenix@yahoo.com.

Why did you decide to write romance novels?  About six years ago I took an online creative writing class from Gotham Writer’s Workshop and my instructor noticed a common thread of romance in my assignments and suggested I try a Romance Writing class.  I did and was hooked!

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?  Lots!  There’s a saying “write what you know.”  Well, I don’t necessarily know any werewolves personally (that I’m aware of), but I have a wild imagination.

Do you feel humor is important in fiction and why?  Humor is very important because I think it’s one common thread that crosses cultures and historical lines.  Humor brings a real-life quality to fiction because the saying is true “truth is stranger than fiction.”

Do you ever ask him/her for advice?  Yes, I recently asked my boyfriend about a scene that I was stuck on and he gave me a great (and humorous) suggestion which I used and expanded upon.

Are you a member of any author groups - RWA, critique groups, etc.?  I’m a member of my home RWA chapter (Las Vegas Romance Writers).  I’m also part of two critique groups, one that meets online and another than meets in person.

Which comes first, the story, the characters, or the setting?  The characters for sure!  My books have to be “cast” first before I can do anything else.

If you came with a warning label, what would it say?  “Do not place in temperatures higher than 95 degrees Fahrenheit.” (which means that I need to stay indoors almost all summer in Las Vegas.)

What is your secret guilty pleasure?  Candy Crush!  I should have never downloaded it.

Leather or lace?  Lace

Satin sheets or Egyptian cotton?   Cotton
Ocean or mountains?    Mountains
City life or country life?     City

Book Excerpt
The rows of standing gravestones stared defiantly back at me like pale faces in a crowded hospital ward, each eager for attention.  But I was focused on only one patient in particular.  I would find his gravestone in the last row, fifth from the side, according to the annoyingly cheery caretaker I had spoken to on the phone earlier in the day when I’d pulled over at a rest stop.
I took a breath and stepped into the eerie yet comforting stillness, taking the walking path that led down the left side.  I glanced at the stones along the way, reading their names aloud to myself in quiet acknowledgment of the frailty of life.  There were approximately twenty rows, each with about forty stones across.  Empty spots were scattered here and there, patiently awaiting their future occupants.
I cleared my throat lightly and wiped my moist eyes with my sleeve.  Soon, the last row was upon me.  I paused.
Not ten feet beyond the last row of stones was the forest’s edge, the trees standing tall like a row of stiff soldiers awaiting inspection.  The moon lit the cemetery in a silver glow, but the forest remained a dense, black, foreboding curtain.  I felt a trickle of fear run down my spine but bravely ignored it, turning right and trekking the remaining few steps to the fifth stone in from the side.
“Madeline E. Sturgis.  Beloved Wife and Mother.”
No, that wasn’t correct, there had to be a mistake.  No offense to Madeline, of course.  I stared blankly at the stone, confused for a moment before recalling that I hadn’t asked which ‘side’ the caretaker was referring to when he gave me directions.  Perhaps he was referring to the other side?  I squinted at the long row of stones stretched out in front of me and began to walk toward the opposite end, glancing at the names as I passed so I wouldn’t miss it.
There was a barely audible crunching sound in the woods to my left, causing me to start and stand perfectly still, head cocked to the side, listening like a rabbit.  My heart raced, pounding heavily inside my chest, and I felt cold to my bones.
Stupid, Lauren, stupid!   You shouldn’t have come here.
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.  It’s probably an animal.
I heard another light crunching sound in the trees, and a bird flew out suddenly, narrowly missing my head.  I caught my breath, bringing my hand up to my heart.  I breathed deeply for a minute, settling my nerves and letting my heart slow down before continuing.
I took the last few steps.
“You shouldn’t be here, Lauren.  Leave quickly.” The voice stopped me in my tracks.  It was David’s voice, in my head.  But, I shrugged it off and walked forward until I saw the new stone and the rectangle of earth in front of it that had noticeably less pine needles than the surrounding area.
I knelt beside it.
“David Alan Wagner.  Beloved Son, Brother and Friend.”  The lines of the letters were etched deep and black, contrasting heavily against the light grey stone.  I gently lay the roses down and traced the letters with my finger.  There was a cross carved below the words.  I ran my hand along the entire edge of the top of the stone, feeling the rough edges in contrast to the freshly polished front and back.  I wondered how long the stone had been there.  Dad assured me he had taken care of the funeral expenses, and he must have made sure there was a rush order on the headstone.  There was a fresh bouquet of white roses lying at the base of the stone and it made me feel deeply saddened for his family, as well as for him.  As much as dad irritated the living hell out of me with his overprotective gestures, if I had to disappear forever and have him think I was dead, it would break my heart.  After we lost mom, we were all the family we had.
I loved David with my whole heart.  Even though we had only been together for two of the six months that he was assigned to me, I knew that he was the “one”.  I just knew it.  There was no explanation.  And, I was the “one” for him as well.  But, now he was gone, and it was unlikely that I would see him again, at least not any time soon.
I reached up to trace the “D” again and saw a strange light flash across the polished surface of the stone, which I realized with horror to be a set of headlights.
Who would be coming to a graveyard at this hour? Besides me of course? Teenagers with a Ouija board and bottle of Strawberry Hill wine in tow, perhaps?
I could take no chances.  I could have been followed.

Wednesday's Writer with Michaela Rhua @MichaelaRhua #XOWedWri

Tell us about your latest book, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?

My latest book Mated Forever is set in my favorite genre –paranormal, with two shifter girls who are brought together on the night of the full moon. They struggle with their attraction for each other but finally give in only for one of them to be kidnapped.

It does cross over different genres: Paranormal, Lesbian and Interracial Romance.

How do we find out about you and your books?

All my book are on my website : http://michaelarhuaauthor.weebly.com/

Facebook is the other place where readers can learn more about me, however I must warn readers I post random stuff that grabs my attention.

How may readers/fans contact you?

I would say Facebook is the best way for readers to contact me as I tend to check in several times in the day.

Why did you decide to write romance novels?

Hmm, interesting question. I have always loved Paranormal Romance books myself so it seemed a natural step to try to pen romance. I love the whole two people meeting, the challenges that come in the way, th journey to get together and the steamy bits too!
How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?

I tend to go with the flow. If an idea grabs me enough then I get going. Sometimes I get ideas but the time is not right and I am not in the mood so I write a few notes in the hope I will flick though my notebook and it will grab me sometimes. I really have to be in the right mood. As yet I can't say what the conditions have to be for the right mood to strike.

What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries?

I love to read, meet friends, drink wine, chat, watch TV, you know the usual things.

What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels? Do you find them difficult to write?

Love scenes have to fit in the story. They have to move the book on and not just be fillers or just written in to spice the book up. I don't find them hard to write, I do find it hard to think of different words for body parts so to avoid repeated phrases.

Which comes first, the story, the characters, or the setting?

For me it is the characters that come to me first. They sit in my mind and grow. Often I start writing and then they emerge fully on the screen in ways I did not expect.

Have you experienced writer's block? If so, how did you work through it?

Hahaha! Lots and lots of times! I have learned to chill and relax and not force myself into something that does not feel right. Each person deals with Writer's Block in their own way. I can't say my way is the best but I am still learning!

What do you enjoy most about writing?

I love the story spreading on the page in front of me. The world of the story becoming clearer and character's lives  and experiences surprising you.

Excerpt
"I am so sorry to draw you into all this Lou, I … I didn't mean for it to get this far." Jorie put down the hot mug on the table next to the sofa.

"It's okay. I asked you to stay, you didn't force this on me, so chill," Lou said. "Anyway, I'm going to take a shower."

Lou got up from the sofa and disappeared into the bedroom.

Damn it! Jorie kicked herself mentally. Why did I not just do what I wanted to, just touch her.She knew exactly how she felt about Lou. She wanted her as a lover and mate. Things were so complicated now. Sleeping with Malachi had been a colossal error. Every time she looked into Lou’s beautiful brown eyes something melted inside.

The noise of the shower interrupted her thoughts. Jorie fisted her hands and gritted her teeth. Then, with decisive steps, she walked through the bedroom to the bathroom. The door was ajar, almost inviting her in. Once inside, the hot steam fogged her vision. Her eyes adjusted quickly, and she made out water cascading over golden brown skin. Rivulets journeyed their way down the perfect body, which was all curves. Jorie wanted to stroke Lou’s round ass, and kiss it all over. She stretched out her hands. Her skin tightened, and heat radiated throughout her body. She knew exactly what was happening. Her wolf begged to be let out to play with her mate.
Breathing deeply, Jorie stepped forward. The steam cleared at little more and Lou turned around. Jorie stared at Lou's round breasts topped off with dark chocolate nipples, and licked her lips. Lou glanced up. Her eyes deepened then a ring of copper formed around her pupils. Lou continued to soap her body. Jorie watched Lou's hand circle down to her bare pussy with the sponge. Her own pussy ached with need. Lou dropped the sponge and leaned her body into the water, washing the suds off her skin. Jorie wanted to touch her so badly.

Lou turned off the water, and stepped out of the shower. Jorie took a deep breath, trying to get her wolf under control. She wanted Lou in human form, to delight in her body. In her wolf form it would be fucking. Her animal instincts would take over like it had with Malachi. There had been little tenderness. When he’d realized she was willing, it became all about taking her quickly. The act had been painful and cold. Where she’d wanted to take it slow, this would be about making love. She wanted to experience love, an all-consuming love. Tender and soft, not hard and fast.

"You're so beautiful, Lou. I want you so much. I've never felt this way before," Jorie whispered.

"I want you, too, Jorie. Only if you’re sure?" Lou gave her a tentative smile.

"Yes, so sure, like never before," Jorie said.

Jorie unbuttoned her shirt. Lou came closer still, helping Jorie to release her arms. Warm hands massaged her breasts. Jorie untwisted Lou's hair and let those dark curls loose. They were silky smooth, and Jorie massaged Lou's head then cupped her face.

Their lips met. Heat surged through Jorie, the air hot and heavy. Lou pushed her toward the bedroom. Jorie delved deeply into Lou's mouth with her tongue, tasting and licking. Her beast growled with delight. This was good, this was right.

"You taste so good, Lou," she said.

Lou pushed her onto the bed then stood over her. A flicker of hesitation registered in her eyes. Jorie undid her jeans, ridding herself of any clothing to reassure Lou this was what she wanted. Words were irrelevant. Lou seemed like watching her strip because intensity deepened her gaze. Once bare, Jorie sat up and held out her hand. Nothing happened. Lou looked at the offered hand. Afraid Lou would back away, Jorie slowly opened her legs. She wasn’t fully bare as Lou, but she hoped Lou would understand.

"I can't wait, Jorie, I have to taste you." Lou licked her lips.

She watched Lou lower her head and inhale the scent of her arousal. Lou growled then pounced on her.

"Get ready, honey." Lou winked.

Wednesday's Writer with Marie Higgins ~ @MarieHigginsXOX #XOWedWri

Tell us about your latest book, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?

My latest book is “Waiting For You”. I like to call this book my ‘everything all wrapped up into one sweet package’ book. Tons of cross over genres – paranormal (heroine is a ghost), time-travel, romantic comedy, romance, historical, contemporary, and last but not last…mystery.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I’m currently working on another time-travel / suspense romance, “Love Lost in Time”. I’m thinking this is going to be a three-book series. It’s my goal to have it published by the middle of September 2013.

Do your fans' comments and letters influence you in any way?

Yes, they do. Occasionally I get emails from fans, but mostly I get comments from an online readers/writers group – Wattpad.com. This is mainly a place for new writers, but there are also some seasoned authors like me on there. I let these readers look over my first drafts for free. I look forward to their encouraging comments. It’s what keeps me going!

Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?

Yes, my favorite comment is when readers tell me my stories are “amazing” and “addicting”. My new favorite “A” words!!

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

Well, my life experience really isn’t in my books (although I do feel pain, heartache, love, anger and those other emotions I write about), but I love adding humor in my stories. That is my personality because I love making people laugh!

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

Most of my stories start with a dream. I’ll dream a scene, usually. In the following few days, I’m thinking about how I can turn it into a story. Does this have good motivation and conflict…if not, how can I add more? Then I figure out the characters; names, history and goals. Then I decide what era I want to put them in, and then figure out what town, etc. Once all that is done, I start writing.  I don’t do a lot of plotting…just let the characters lead the way. If I stumble across something in the story I’m not too sure about, then I’ll do research.

What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels? Do you find them difficult to write?

I don’t write love scenes. My stories are considered “sweet” (which means no sex scenes and no swear words). But I sure do love to write sexual attraction as long as it stays clean.

What does your husband/wife/significant other think of your writing?

18 years ago when I first started writing, my husband absolutely hated that I wrote romance. He hated that I spend so much time on the computer instead of being in the front room with him watching television. When I finally started making money on my stories, he decided he’d better be more supportive or I would take my big royalty check and go on a cruise without him. Heehee

Do you ever ask him/her for advice?

Never… Well, only if it’s about cars or wood-working tools.

Please tell us about yourself.

I’ve lived in Utah all my life and I’ve been married too long…um, I mean 28 years. I have two daughters (who are now grown and out of the house) and one of my daughters has two children. I love being a grandmother! I work for the state of Utah full time. Other than my writing, my family is most important next to my religion.

Black or red? ~ both…they were my wedding colors. Lol!  But if I had to choose one, I’d chose black.
Satin sheets or Egyptian cotton? ~ satin!
Ocean or mountains? ~ Mountains!
City life or country life? ~ Country.
Hunky heroes or average Joe? ~ HUNK! (was there any other answer? Really?)
Party life or quiet dinner for two? ~ Dinner for two.
Dogs or cats? ~ Dogs
Dessert ~ Brownies
City ~ Brigham City (where I live)
Season ~ Autumn
Type of hero ~ HUNKY…oh, but he must have a great sense of humor, too!
Type of heroine ~ Spunky – hard-headed!

Blurb:
When a beautiful woman claiming to be a ghost from 1912 appears in Nick Marshal’s new office and begs for help in solving her murder, he’s intrigued enough to consider her plea. A scandal that rocked Hollywood almost destroyed his law practice, so taking on a client who insists she’s dead seems a good way to refresh his career. The more history he uncovers, the deeper he falls for the ghost. Abigail Carlisle believes Nick is her heart’s true desire, but how can happily ever after happen when she’s already dead?

Excerpt:

He lifted his gaze, and Abigail noticed the deep lines etched around his eyes. So adorable!
“I must still be dreaming,” Nick said. “I woke up this morning from a weird dream, and now I don’t think I’m really awake.”
She scooted to the edge of the desk and leaned closer, reaching out to touch him. Then, realizing the gesture was futile, she stopped her hand in midair. “I wish I could convince you this is not a dream.”
“How?”
“I don’t know. There has to be some way I can persuade you.”
Mr. Marshal brought his face closer. Nervously, she sucked her bottom lip again. His emerald green eyes dropped to her mouth, making her heart beat slightly faster.
“You do that a lot.” His voice came out husky and rich.
Dumbstruck, her mouth turned dry as if she’d been chewing on cotton instead of her lip. Her pulse quickened, the beat of her heart pounded in her ears. Strange to think she could still feel her heartbeat even when she was dead.
He drew an invisible line around her lips with his finger. “You do that when you’re worried.”
“I know. I’ve done that since my mother died.”
“When you chew on your lip, it leaves a raspberry color. I’ve been studying you really hard this morning.”
She smiled. “Just as I have been analyzing you.”
Nick arched an eyebrow. “And how long have you been doing that?”
“A few weeks—since you started setting up your new office, anyway.”
Nodding, he pulled at his collar again. Was he panicked or just nervous? She wished she could ease his mind in some way. Being afraid of her wasn’t a good thing at this point. She must earn his trust.
He returned his gaze to her mouth. “I think it’s cute the way you suck on your bottom lip. It makes me want to nibble on it, too.”
Her heart leapt to her throat. What a bold—and improper—thing to say! So why did she like it so much? And why did her head fill with images of his lips on hers… “You are talking nonsense, Mr. Marshal.” Her voice quivered. She tapped her fingernail on the desk. The longer he stared at her lips, the faster her finger tapped. She nibbled on her lips again.
“I think I know a way for you to prove you’re not a figment of my imagination,” he said.
She stilled her hand and inhaled slowly. “Indeed? How?”
“By…um…well, you can suck on your lip to make it a raspberry color, so perhaps you could do the same to me?”
Blood rushed to her cheeks and she thought her face would ignite into flames—a feeling she hadn’t experienced since she’d died. Her heartbeat danced an unsteady rhythm, hammering like a runaway train. Yet, the idea wasn’t that far-fetched.
His eyes twinkled as if improper thoughts swam in his head, also. Indeed, he was a rogue of the first order.
“You…you want me to…suck on your lip?”
Nick pushed away from his desk and stood. She rose with him until they were face to face. He pulled the shirt collar away from his neck again, exposing more skin. Oh heavens!
“As much as the thought of kissing you sounds enjoyable,” he said, “I was thinking about something entirely different.” He pointed to his neck and chuckled. “Go for it, honey. Give me a hickey. This ought to be interesting.”
“A hickey?”
“Yes. Suck on my neck until you bruise my skin.”
“Oh, that is utterly ridiculous.” She released an uneasy laugh even as his deep voice sent heated tingles up her spine. As improper as the suggestion seemed, she still wanted to do it with every fiber of her being…or in her case, semi-being. “Why, I cannot even touch you. How am I supposed to draw forth a bruise?”
“I just want to see if it works.” He shrugged. “What could it hurt?”
Fear and anticipation made her hands moist. She shouldn’t do it, but she wanted to prove to him she was not a figment of his imagination. Would it work? What if it didn’t? He’d think she was just a hallucination.
No matter how insane the idea sounded, she had to try. She had to prove to him she was real…well, as real as possible, anyway.
Taking a deep breath, she concentrated on her goal. While she’d been dead, she’d moved papers and objects just a little heavier, but could she do this? Would her newly-acquired ghostly skills allow her to make a mark on his neck?
She stepped closer. Once again, butterflies jumped wildly in her stomach. Swallowing hard, she leaned toward his neck. His masculine spice encircled her.
Closing her eyes, she smiled. Never in her life—or death—had she imagined doing this to a man, but if it would prove to him she needed his help, she’d try anything.
She opened her mouth slightly, putting all her concentration on bruising his neck. She sucked, just as if she was trying to draw juice from a stubborn melon. Although she couldn’t feel a thing, she prayed something good would come out of their little experiment.
A low growl shook his chest. “Hmm…I feel tingles.”
Her heart sped with excitement, and she concentrated harder, putting all of her effort into it. Her cheeks ached with the strain, but she continued.
A deep groan rattled in his chest. “It kind of tickles, too.”
That’s a good sign!
She pulled back and looked into his face. His eyes were closed, his mouth stretched in a grin. “Well?” she whispered. “Did you feel anything?”
He opened his eyes and touched where her mouth had been. Immediately, she noticed a red mark. Happiness shot through her, but she tamed it. Although she saw it, she needed him to see it, too.
Nick moved to the adjoining bathroom and looked in the mirror hanging on the wall. She followed behind him. When he caught his reflection, his eyes widened and his mouth dropped open.
“I’ll be damned… You gave me a hickey!”
She sighed. I did, didn’t I? She relaxed her stiff shoulders. “Will you believe me now?”
“I…I…” He shook his head. “I should believe you. It’s there, but…”
“But what?”
He met her gaze through the mirror. “But if you remember correctly, I think I’m loony, so maybe I’m just imagining seeing it there.”
She growled and bunched her hands into fists.

Wednesday's Writer with M.S. Kaye ~ @mskosciuszko #XOWedWri

Today we have the wonderful M.S. Kaye with us. Please join me in welcoming her to XtraOrdinary Romance.

Tell us about your latest book, including its genre. Does it cross over to other genres? If so, what are they?

Fight Princess is a romantic suspense novel about a high society princess who fights in an underground ring.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Once is under contract with Jupiter Gardens Press. It’s an inspirational women’s novel about a young woman who falls for a man about to enter the priesthood.

How do we find out about you and your books?

http://www.BooksByMSK.com has a page devoted to each book.

Why did you decide to write romance novels?

That’s the genre the stories that pop out of my head fit into.

How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?

Quite a bit, actually. Sometimes I don’t even realize it until my husband points it out. He especially loves all the little inside jokes (In Once the male pov character teases that you can’t trust women whose name ends in Y. He gives several names as an example, including Missy. I HATE to be called Missy.)

When did you first think about writing and what prompted you to submit your first manuscript?

I started writing one night when I was watching a writer interview where she was talking about how she’d come up with the idea, and I realized I had an idea, that I’d had it for a while. I grabbed a notebook and started writing, and I haven’t stopped for four and a half years, every day.

Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?

Depends on the length, but a 3-4 months, generally.

Where do you start when writing? Research, plotting, outline, or...?

First, I have to find that one tidbit about the story that will drive me. For Fight Princess, it was the concept of a polished, educated young woman who beats the hell out of people in an underground fight ring. I had only the character, nothing else. Then I built the story around her.

How do you come up with ideas?

I see or think of snapshots of unique people or circumstances and build a story around that.

What are your thoughts on love scenes in romance novels? Do you find them difficult to write?

Sometimes I find it difficult to decide how far to go with them. I generally keep from being too graphic and focus on the sweetness, rather than all the “bits.”

What kind of research do you do?

Google is the most wonderful invention.

What does your husband/wife/significant other think of your writing?

He’s always supportive of everything I do.

Do you ever ask him/her for advice?

When I’m writing a male character, I’ll ask what’s realistic from a man’s perspective.

Do you have a favorite author? Favorite book?

Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Who are some of your other favorite authors to read?

John Steinbeck and J. K. Rowling

Are you a member of any author groups - RWA, critique groups, etc.?

Florida Writers’ Association. I also run the FWA Clay County Critique group.

What do you think of critique groups in general?

Love them, as long as the atmosphere is correct—be open, leave your ego at the door, be supportive, and remember it’s all advise (ignore it if you wish).

How many books have you written, how many have been published?

Ten. Two are under contract.

After you've written your book and it's been published, do you ever buy it and/or read it?

I love to read my own books—because I love the stories and characters.

What are the elements of a great romance for you?

A strong woman and a strong man who wants to protect her, even though she doesn’t need to be protected.

Are you in control of your characters or do they control you?

Both.

Have you experienced writer's block? If so, how did you work through it?

I believe writer’s block is a myth. It’s just a combination of exhaustion and lack of passion.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

Writing those moments that make your heart race, make you cry, or make you go “holy sh**!”

If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?

Something much more boring.

Are there any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

Write for yourself, not everyone else. If you’re passionate about the story, your readers will be as well.

A biography has been written about you. What do you think the title would be in six words or less?

Many Tales from Few Travels

If you came with a warning label, what would it say?

I’m quite until you get to know me. Then I say the craziest, most random sh**.

What is your secret guilty pleasure?

If I tell you, it won’t be a secret anymore.

If you were stranded on a tropical island, who would it be with? You can choose any living, deceased or mythical figure.

My husband.

Can you describe the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

Too many to choose from—I taught kids for almost 15 years.

Tell us about the scariest thing that ever happened to you.

I had to tell my husband that his father had died in a car accident.

If you were on a reality show, what one would it be?

I’m too much of a control freak to be on a reality show.

What question would you love to answer that I didn't ask?

You asked a lot of questions—I can’t think of any more. :)

Excerpt:
Things aren’t what they seem. Don’t get involved.

Celisse is too headstrong to listen. Her best friend’s boyfriend is dead, and she does not heed Cullen’s warning, slipped to her in a note as he’s being arrested for the murder.

Cullen tries to keep Celisse out of danger and also tries to avoid her, both unsuccessfully. He can’t deny his feelings for her anymore, but he knows he can’t have her. If she ever discovered the truth about his past, she’d surely hate him.

While struggling with her intense feelings for Cullen, Celisse uses her skills as an ex-prosecutor to investigate, all while continuing to fight for Ogden, the organizer of an underground fight ring. She eventually realizes things are connected—the ring, Ogden, Cullen, the murder, and herself. She races to uncover the truth before she’s arrested or becomes the next victim—or perhaps, the next culprit.
